25 - 분별없는 교화

Section XXV. The Illusion of Ego

illusion: 오해, 환상

ego: 자아

 

수보리야, 어떻게 생각하느냐. 너희들은 여래가 이런 생각을 하되 내가 마땅히 중생을 제도한다 말하지 말라. 수보리야, 이런 생각은 하지 말지니

Subhuti, what do you think? Let no one say the Tathagata cherishes the idea: I must liberate all living beings. Allow no such thought, Subhuti.

cherish: 소중히 여기다.

liberate: 해방시키다.

왜냐하면 실로는 여래가 제도할 중생이 없음이니, 만약 여래가 제도할 중생이 있다 하면 여래는  아와 인과 중생과 수자가 있음이니라.

Wherefore? Because in reality there are no living beings to be liberated by the Tathagata. If there were living beings for the Tathagata to liberate, He would partake in the idea of selfhood, personality entity, and separate individuality.

partake of: ~을 띠다, 취하다.

entity: 독립체

수보리야, 여래가 설하되 아가 있다는 것은  아가 있음이 아니거늘 범부들이 이를 아가 있다고 여기느니라. 

Subhuti, though the common people accept egoity as real, the Tathagata declares that ego is not different from non-ego.

egoity: 자아의 특성, 상태

수보리야, 범부라는 것도 여래가 설하되  범부가 아니고  이름이 범부니라.

Subhuti, those whom the Tathagata referred to as "common people" are not really common people; such is merely a name.

merely: 그저

 

26 - 법신은 상이 아님

Section XXVI. The Body of Truth has no Marks

 

수보리야, 어떻게 생각하느냐. 가히 삼십이상으로써 여래를   있겠느냐

Subhuti, what do you think? May the Tathagata be perceived by the thirty-two marks [of a great man]?

Tathagata: 여래

perceive: 인지하다, 감지하다.

mark: 표시

thirty-two marks: 삼십이상

수보리가 말씀드리되 그렇습니다. 삼십이상으로써 여래를   있습니다."

Subhuti answered: No, the Tathagata may not be perceived thereby.

thereby: 그것때문에

부처님께서 말씀하시되 수보리야, 만약 삼십이상으로 여래를 관한다 하면 전륜성왕도  여래이리라.”

Then Buddha said: Subhuti, if the Tathagata may be perceived by such marks, any great imperial ruler is the same as the Tathagata.

imperial: 황제의

ruler: 통치자

great imperial ruler: 전륜성왕

수보리가 부처님께 사뢰었다.“세존이시여, 제가 부처님의 설하신 뜻을 이해하기에는 응당 삼십이상으로써 여래를 관할  없습니다.”

Subhuti then said to Buddha: World-honored One, as I understand the meaning of Buddha's words, the Tathagata may not be perceived by the thirty-two marks.

그때 세존께서 게송으로 말씀하셨다.

Whereupon the World-honored One uttered this verse:

Whereupon: 그래서, 그 결과

utter: 내다, 하다.

verse: 운문, 시

만약 색신으로 나를 보거나 음성으로써 나를 구하면  사람은 사도를 행함이라. 능히 여래를 보지 못하리라.”

Who sees Me by form, Who seeks Me in sound, Perverted are his footsteps upon the Way,

For he cannot perceive the Tathagata.

Perverted: 비정상적인, 왜곡된, 도착된

 

27 - 단절과 소멸의 초월

Section XXVII. It is Erroneous to Affirm that All Things are Ever Extinguished

Erroneous: 잘못된

Affirm: 단언하다.

Extinguish: 끄다, 끝내다.

 

수보리야, 네가 만약 이런 생각을 하되 여래는 구족한 상을 쓰지 않는 연고로 아뇩다라삼먁삼보리를 얻었다하느냐.

수보리야, ‘여래는 구족한 상을 쓰지 않는 연고로 아뇩다라삼먁삼보리를 얻었다 생각을 하지 말라.

Subhuti, if you should conceive the idea that the Tathagata attained the Consummation of Incomparable Enlightenment by reason of His perfect form, do not countenance such thoughts. The Tathagata's attainment was not by reason of His perfect form. 

conceive: 생각하다, 상상하다

attain: 이루다

Consummation of Incomparable Enlightenment: 아뇩다라삼먁삼보리

perfect form: 구족한 상

countenance: 지지하다.

attainment: 성취, 달성

수보리야, 네가 만약 이런 생각을 하되 아뇩다라삼먁삼보리심을 발한 사람은 모든 법이 단멸했다고 말하는가한다면 이런 생각도 하지 말지니,

[On the other hand] Subhuti, if you should conceive the idea that anyone in whom dawns the Consummation of Incomparable Enlightenment declares that all manifest standards are ended and extinguished, do not countenance such thoughts.

dawn: 시작되다. 밝다.

manifest: 나타난, 분명한

무슨 까닭인가 하면 아뇩다라삼먁삼보리심을 발한 사람은 법에 있어서 단멸상을 말하지 않느니라.

Wherefore? Because the man in whom the Consummation of Incomparable Enlightenment dawns does not affirm concerning any formula that it is finally extinguished.

affirm: 단언하다

concerning: ~에 관한

formula: 법

 

28 - 탐착 없는 복덕

Section XXVIII. Attachment to Rewards of Merit

 

수보리야, 만약 보살이 항하의 모래수와 같은 세계에 가득찬 칠보를 가지고 보시하더라도 만약  어떤 사람은 일체법이  없음을 알아서 인을 얻어 이르면  보살은 앞의 보살이 얻은 공덕보다 수승하리라.

Subhuti, if one Bodhisattva bestows in charity sufficient of the seven treasures to fill as many worlds as there are sand-grains in the river Ganges, and another, realizing that all things are egoless, attains perfection through patient forbearance, the merit of the latter will far exceed that of the former. 

bestow: 수여하다.

attain: 이루다

forbearance: 관용

무슨 까닭인가. “수보리야, 모든 보살은 복덕을 받지 않는 까닭이니라.”

Why is this, Subhuti? It is because all Bodhisattvas are insentient as to the rewards of merit.

insentient: 감각이 없는, 의식이 없는

as to: ~에 관해

수보리가 부처님께 사뢰었다. “세존이시여, 어찌하여 보살이  복덕을 받지 않습니까. ”

Then Subhuti said to Buddha: What is this saying, World-honored One, that Bodhisattvas are insentient as to rewards of merit?

수보리야, 보살의 지은  복덕은 응당 탐착하지 않음이니  까닭에 복덕을 받지 않는다고 말하느니라.

[And Buddha answered]: Subhuti, Bodhisattvas who achieve merit should not be fettered with desire for rewards. Thus, it is said that the rewards of merit are not received.

fetter: 구속하다.
